This assignment was to describe a family or friend doing some kind of action or task. The goal was to show not tell.
Tyler Glass and Bryson Schnitta, my best friends, 20 years old, making butterscotch pudding.
The gentle hum of fluorescent lights mixed with the low tone of the local radio station as Tyler and Bryson race through Walmart on a mission. My two best friends are getting ingredients to make butterscotch pudding from the Heroes Feast D&D cookbook. After purchasing all the ingredients they return to Tyler’s house, his light blue and white kitchen counters cluttered in random items brought in by him and his mom.
With his round glasses and hoodie pulled over his broad shoulders, Tyler Glass moves swiftly and decisively while making any sort of food, in complete contrast to his anxious personality.
Proudly donning his Ole Miss baseball cap and golden fishhook on the brim, Bryson Schnitta towers over Tyler, but his lanky figure lends more to awkward movements. Tyler tasks Bryson to hand him ingredients rather than getting his hands dirty with the cooking.
The two boys were working with ferocity and speed. They wanted to make sure that this pudding was done quickly enough for everyone to enjoy. However, in their haste the two of them hadn’t realized they needed unsalted butter instead of salted butter.
“The recipe called for salt so I was like okay we can just figure out how much salt is in the salted butter and then subtract that from how much salt we add later,” Tyler said. “So, I handed the two sticks of butter to Bryson and said, ‘Bryson I need to you tell me how much salt is in this butter’. He then looks me dead in the eyes with the blankest expression I have ever seen in my life. And says ‘Butter.’
At the end of the day, the two of them ignored the recipe and made some tasty pudding.
